Cache901 v0.4 Released
Cache901 v0.4, major updates, many new features.
Cache901 v0.2 was, in many ways, an experiment to see if I could make something that would be useful.
Cache901 v0.4 is the next step in that path. This release focuses on improving searching capabilities and integrating with the GPS. The primary question was "How will this piece of code help me find a cache?" If I couldn't answer that question, I didn't focus on the feature.
As such, Cache901 v0.4 has an impressive array of features to offer, including:
- Integration with GPSBabel, allowing the use of GPSr's.
- Advanced searching, allowing for many of the same search parameters in Cache901 that are available on GeoCaching.com in its Pocket Queries. In fact, the only features not currently provided require Cache901 to know your account information.
- The ability to save searches, and have them appear on the menu bar.
- Built in mapping. This is not yet fully featured, as this will require integration with something like Google Earth or Google Maps. However, it can show you all the caches in your search, and show you their positions. As such, it's still very handy.
- You can attach your own logs, notes, and photos to any cache. Cache901 will not upload logs, not yet, but it will allow you to track your own personalized information.
- Cache Day. This new feature deserves more than just a bullet point, though.
If, like me, you find yourself occasionally setting up a day of caching with friends, you might find yourself responsible for figuring out which caches to visit, and in which order, so as to maximize your caching efforts. Cache Day does just that. When you see a cache you want to do, you can add it to a cache day. Once you have done so, you can change the order of the caches, remove caches, etc. You can also add waypoints to the Cache Day.
Furthermore, Cache Day becomes a search item, so you can just view the caches you are doing in the order you are doing them.
Finally, you can send the whole Cache Day to your GPSr easily. When you do this, your GPSr will receive each cache and waypoint as a waypoint and it will receive the entire Cache Day as a route for you to follow. Your GPSr will be as ready for the day as you are with just three clicks.
And, of course, we still maintain our cross-platform capability, with simultaneous releases on Debian/Ubuntu Linux, Windows 2000/XP, and Mac OSX 10.4. You can get all of them by visiting our downloads page.
